Fi's Beret

I was thrilled to be asked to make this beret. Berets are always interesting to make, lace ones even more so. It's another case of blocking making something magically transform.

I absolutely love how the decreases come together to form the top of the beret and how the lace pattern looks. Now that it's off my needles I'm completely enchanted by it.

It's so soft and cuddly too. Even before blocking I wanted to just sit and pet the yarn. I hope it brings much happiness and joy to my friend.

WIP Wednesday: Beret & Bloodshot

Reading:

Hellbent by Cherie Priest. I love reading about Raylene and how she gets herself into, and out of, various dangerous situations. I love Priest's writing style, it's almost like sitting down to chat with somebody. It's good to see the returning supporting cast as well and getting to know more about them.

Knitting:
The beret finally settled down and allowed me to knit it correctly .. or I finally started following *gasp* the pattern. I thought I was to begin with but apparently I kept forgetting small details like change needle size. I'm up to (down to?) the decreases now and love how it's looking.

WIP Wednesday: Head and Feet

Writing:
Magic Balance (Working Title) - Rewrites
Previous Word Count: 21,391
Current Word Count: 21,391 (Up 0)

Two weeks in a row ... the brain is just not having it. I think I'm going to take a break from this and do some of the suggested edits on Fey Led instead. Perhaps then my mind will be more willing to go back to this world.

Reading:

From Dead To Worse by Charlaine Harris Over halfway on this one and still enjoying it. I love her writing style and it's nice to see Sookie again. I'm gleefully looking forward to the return of True Blood soon. I also managed to catch the Q&A Panel with Kristin Bauer at Comicpalooza this past weekend. It was a very ... amusing time as she shared what she could with us about story lines and antics on set.

Knitting:
Not a Decepticon Scarf!!! I almost finished it at Comicpalooza but had left half of it at home (no sense in carrying it around after all). So earlier today I finished that up and grafted it together (would have 'never' been able to do that at con). Final pictures of it soon! However ... that meant I needed something to work on. Naturally I'd planned ahead and grabbed the yarn and stuff for Fi's beret that she's ordered. Except I didn't have her measurements. Doh! Ever the over planner I also had sock yarn and I happily cast on a pair of socks.

Caprica Circles

I think they're incredible! I'm in serious love with them. They'll be moved to my travel project since I managed to get Fi's measurement today and started on her beret.

Fi's Beret

Such a simple looking thing .. and yet it took me 2.5 hours to cast on and knit the first row. Insanity I tell you. I'd started with a circular like the pattern called for but all of my stitches fit easily on one needle because my needles are far too long. I love my interchangeable set but the tips are quite long and not at all suited to smaller projects. Good thing I had DPN's on hand.

Brambles Beret

I love things that knit up quickly and easily. It's a lot of fun to work on projects that require more thought and time but sometimes the quick is what you need. This beret for a friend was exactly that.

I swore I had enough yarn to make it. I got closer to the end and started praying I had enough. Finally though it was far too obvious that I didn't have enough to finish the beret. So off we went to the store. They still had the same dye lot of the yarn that I'd bought a year ago! I wouldn't have to start over from the beginning! And because I only needed about 20 yards of the Cascade 220 ... I still have more than enough to make something for myself. Win!

WIP Wednesday: Brambles & Magic Balance

Writing:
Magic Balance (Working Title) - Rewrites
Previous Word Count: 606
Current Word Count: 1,342 (Up 736)

Slow progress but progress. We've met the 2 of the main characters and learned a bit about where the story is going.

Reading:

The Light-Years Beneath My Feet by Alan Dean Foster. I read the preceding book a couple of years ago and have been wanting to read the rest of the series. So far it's enjoyable. While I understand the need for words that aren't English words, given that it takes place on alien planets, I struggle to avoid skimming when those words are used repeatedly.

Knitting:
Just last night I cast on for a beret that's been commissioned so there's no much to show. I love the chart though so it should once again be a quick knit and be a lovely finished piece.

I also received this in the mail just today: a skein of Ella Rae Lace Merino in Pumpkin, blue, and maroon that's destined to become a glove and scarf set as another commission.

WIP Wednesday: Graced Lace & Fey Led

Writing:
Fey Led (Working Title) - Rewrites
Previous Word Count: 19,146
Current Word Count: 24,034 (Up 4,888)

And now the first half of the book is done, so to speak. I've destroyed their world and it's time to start putting it back together. The pieces won't match up but it's up to them to figure out how to bridge the gaps.

Knitting:
I managed a great feat yesterday. I finished both the diagonal lace socks 'and' Lynn's gloves! So naturally I immediately cast on for another project. *laugh*

I give you the humble beginnings of a beret.

Now I just need to finish up the ribbing before Miss Kid gets here this weekend and needs those needles back for her wrist warmers!
